Scenes from the Sea

Upwind sailing to Ensenada Grande, our favorite island anchorage so far. Conditions were sporty, not unlike sailing in SF Bay.

We initially planned to merely tip our bow into the Sea of Cortez at La Paz, but with the encouragement of the pleasant climate and comments from friends, we stayed to explore the “aquarium of the world” for the remainder of the year.

I’m writing from a restaurant rooftop in Puerto Escondido awaiting some friends’ arrivals from the airport for Christmas around Isla Carmen and Coronados. From there, we look for a weather window to cross the Gulf of California to Altata and Mazatlan.

The juxtaposition of the dusty desert and sea teeming with life is unlike anything we had ever seen. Staring across the water for only a few seconds turns up numerous jumping fish, and occasionally a leaping Mobula ray. Imagine the Grand Canyon filled with Caribbean blue.
