Hi folks,
We’ve been quiet during the home stretch, landfall, and transition to solid ground.
It’s been… a lot!
These days we live with two friends near the James River. We work for energy companies, using the sustainability and resiliency skills we honed at sea to modernize the grid. We still make stuff out of wood, fabric, and yarn. We planted some seeds to start a garden. We host a weekly craft night. We try to go to the gym a lot and eat homemade meals between the new compression of schedules in a city.
In July, we sat down with Ben on the Out the Gate sailing podcast and talked about our voyage. It was pretty fresh then and we’re grateful to have unpacked things a bit with Ben and have a record of where our heads were at. I think what we really want to get across is this — the trip was difficult and doable at almost every turn. We will never regret all that time together and in nature, although there are some downsides to dropping out of your “usual” life for a spell. Step by step, we made it, with help from the usual suspects and the most unexpected places.
Give it a listen, let us know what you think.
A gigantic thanks to everyone who knows us and everyone who read along.
This trip used every ounce of capacity we had and that capacity was built over a lifetime of relationships, activities, and support. Thanks to our families, friends, teammates, coaches, captains, and everyone we met along the way. Thanks to our float plan crew (Carla, Dave, Joe, and Emily) for keeping an eye on us from San Francisco to the Chesapeake over 777 days .
We’ll be topping up the blog with other writing over the next few weeks, so stay tuned! If you’d like to hear from Ashley more consistently, subscribe to her newsletter: Clouds Form Over Land.
We’re hoping to give a few talks about the journey over the summer. If you have a sailing club, school, or other group that would like to see photos and hear sailing yarns, give us a shout!
